講演概要

Prof. Simon Gosling provided a GIR seminar on the 18/04, talking about the impact of climate change on heat stress and possible adaptation strategies.

The lecture introduced the main findings of the IPCC on extreme heat exposure, from a regional and global perspective. Next the lecture introduced heat stress risk, which can be divided into hazards. Exposure, vulnerability, and coping capacity according to the Sendai Framework on Disaster Reduction. This definition for heat stress was applied to a project in Nottingham where various datasets were selected to represent such components.

The lecture then provided an overview of how heat stress impacts labor productivity and showcased specific analyses which analyze i) future heat stress for brick kilns workers in India (Boyd et al., 2025) and ii) global change in mortality due to heat stress (Luthi et al., 2023).

The last section of the lecture focused on adaptation and resilience, quantifying how much of the decrease in labor productivity may be avoided owing to the adoption of wearable robotics and exoskeletons. The benefits of urban cooling and green infrastructures were also demonstrated (Gosling et al., 2017). Last Prf. Gosling showcased a miniature 3d printed version of Nottingham. The various components of heat stress can be directly overlay onto the city via a projector allowing easy communication with decision-maker.

The lecture was followed by approximately five questions from participants attending both on-site and on-line.
